The 99 Most Beautiful Names of Allah (asma al-husna)

Allah commands in Surah Al-A'raf 7:180: 'And to Allah belong the best names, so invoke Him by them.' This is the foundation of every supplication. Below is each name with its meaning, the Qur'anic or authentic-Sunnah source where it appears, and how a Muslim calls upon Allah by it.

The Qur'anic command

And to Allah belong the best names, so invoke Him by them. And leave those who practise deviation concerning His names; they will be recompensed for what they have been doing.

Qur'an 7:180Verified

The command is direct: fa-d'uhu biha - so call upon Him by them. The believer does not invent names for Allah; he uses what Allah has named Himself with in the Qur'an or what the Prophet()named Him with in authentic Sunnah.

Allah - there is no deity except Him. To Him belong the best names.

The famous hadith on the 99 names

Narrated by Abu Hurairah (radiy-Allahu anhu)

Allah has ninety-nine names - one hundred minus one. Whoever enumerates (ahsa) them will enter Paradise.

Sahih al-Bukhari 2736 · Sahih (al-Bukhari)Verified

Narrated by Abu Hurairah (radiy-Allahu anhu)

Allah has ninety-nine names; whoever preserves them will enter Paradise. And indeed Allah is Odd (One) and loves the odd.

Sahih Muslim 2677 · Sahih (Muslim)Verified

The base hadith - that Allah has 99 names and the one who ahsa (enumerates, embraces, memorises, and acts by) them enters Paradise - is sahih, recorded in both Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim. Classical scholars (Imam al-Khattabi, Ibn Hajar, Ibn al-Qayyim) explain that ahsahas three layers:

  1. Memorise the names - know them by heart.
  2. Understand the meaning of each name - know what each one teaches you about Allah.
  3. Act by them - call upon ar-Razzaq for provision, al-Hafiz for protection, ash-Shafi for healing; let each name shape your tawakkul and your character.

An important note on the enumeration

Honest disclosure: the famous list of 99 names attributed to Jami at-Tirmidhi 3507 is graded Da'if (weak) by Darussalam, and al-Tirmidhi himself noted that it is gharib (singularly transmitted). Classical scholars including Ibn Taymiyyah, Ibn Hajar, and contemporary scholars al-Albani and Ibn al-Uthaymeen have held that the specific enumeration of the 99 is the scholar's ijtihad from the Qur'an and authentic Sunnah - not a fixed list revealed by the Prophet().

What this site does, accordingly: every name listed below has a textual reference in the Qur'an or authentic Sunnah, cited next to it. Where a name appears across multiple verses, several are listed. Where a name comes from authentic Sunnah, the hadith is named. Where a traditional list includes a name whose attestation is weaker, we have included only the textually-attested forms. Read this page not as a fixed ritual list, but as an invitation to know Allah by what He named Himself.

The three verses that enumerate many of His names at once

The Greatest Name (Ism Allah al-A'zam)

The Prophet()taught that there is a Greatest Name of Allah by which, when He is called, He answers. Scholars have identified several candidates from the authentic narrations:

  • Al-Hayy al-Qayyum (the Ever-Living, the Self-Sustaining) - mentioned in Surah Al-Baqarah 2:255, Aal-Imran 3:2, and Taha 20:111. Many scholars consider this the Greatest Name; it is the name the Prophet()said the Ism al-A'zam was contained in.
  • Dhu-l-Jalali wa-l-Ikram (Owner of Majesty and Honour) - Sunan Abi Dawud 1493 names this as a Greatest Name; graded Sahih by al-Albani.
  • The Allah-Ahad-Samad cluster - in the du'a where a man said: "Allahumma inni as'aluka bi-anni ashhadu annaka anta-Allah, la ilaha illa anta, al-Ahadu-s-Samad, alladhi lam yalid wa lam yulad..." the Prophet()said: "He has asked Allah by His name by which, when He is called by it, He answers, and when He is asked by it, He gives." (Sunan Abi Dawud 1493, graded Sahih).

How to use the names in daily du'a

  1. Open with praise. Allahu akbar; alhamdulillahi rabbi-l-alamin; ar-Rahmani-r-Rahim.
  2. Invoke by the name that matches your need. For healing, Ya Shafi. For provision, Ya Razzaq. For protection, Ya Hafiz. For tawakkul, Ya Wakil. For forgiveness, Ya Ghaffar, Ya Ghafur.
  3. State your specific need. Allah knows it; you ask anyway, because the asking is itself worship.
  4. Close with salah on the Prophet().

The du'a of distress, by His Greatest Name combination

Narrated by Aishah (radiy-Allahu anha)

O Allah, Lord of mankind, remove the harm and cure him. You are the Healer. There is no healing except Your healing - a healing that leaves behind no illness.

Sahih al-Bukhari 5743 · Sahih (al-Bukhari)Verified
?Is it required to memorise all 99 names to enter Paradise?
The hadith uses ahsa which classical scholars interpret in three layers: literal memorisation, understanding, and acting by them. A believer who calls upon Allah by His names that he does know, while striving to learn more, is on the path the hadith describes. The Prophet()himself did not require memorisation as a test from his Companions.
?Are there exactly 99 names, or more?
The hadith specifies 99 names by which the one who enumerates them enters Paradise. Other names of Allah exist in authentic texts but are not part of that specific 99. The Prophet()also said in another authentic narration: "I ask You by every name belonging to You by which You have named Yourself or that You have taught to anyone in Your creation or that You have kept hidden in the knowledge of the unseen with You" (Musnad Ahmad). So 99 is the specific count promised in the hadith, but Allah's names in totality are more numerous.
?Why does the Tirmidhi list of 99 names appear in so many books?
Because it is the most familiar list, and because al-Tirmidhi himself recorded it in his collection. Many printed editions of Hisn al-Muslim and other du'a compilations reproduce it. The base hadith on 99 names is sahih; the specific Tirmidhi enumeration of which 99 is graded Da'if. The honest approach is to acknowledge both.
?Can I make du'a in English using these names?
Yes. The Qur'anic verse 7:180 is general: invoke Him by His names. Speak in any language you understand. The Arabic name itself - Ya Hafiz, Ya Razzaq, Ya Shafi - is preferred where you can pronounce it, then continue in your own language. Allah hears every language.
?Is repeating one name many times a recognised practice?
Repeating a name as part of contemplation is not foreign to the Sunnah - the Prophet()taught fixed numerical dhikr (subhana-Allah 33x, alhamdulillah 33x, Allahu akbar 34x after each fard salah). But fixing a specific number to a specific name with a guaranteed effect (e.g., "recite Ya Wadud 100 times for marriage") is innovation. The Sunnah is to invoke by the name in du'a, not to treat the name as a numerical formula.
?What if I do not understand the meanings yet?
Begin with what you know. Read three or four names a day with their meanings. Repeat them in your du'a that day. Over weeks the names settle in your heart and start to surface in difficulty - Ya Hafiz when you fear, Ya Shafi when you are ill, Ya Wakil when you have to act without certainty. The Names teach themselves through use.
