Evening remembrances (adhkar): protection through the night

Evening is when the devils scatter, and the Prophet (peace be upon him) commanded specific remembrances at this time. Recite them with presence; the effect comes from sincerity, not speed.

The window of recitation

The evening adhkar are recited between Asr and Maghrib in most scholars' reckoning, with the period extending into the early part of the night. The end of the day's working hours, before the shayatin spread at sunset, is the natural moment to seal the day with dhikr.

The core evening recitation

1. Ayat al-Kursi

Allahu la ilaha illa huwa al-Hayyul-Qayyum...

Allah - there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of all existence. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is before them and what will be after them, and they encompass nothing of His knowledge except for what He wills. His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation tires Him not. And He is the Most High, the Most Great.

Say: He is Allah, the One. Allah is the Eternal Refuge. He neither begets nor is born. Nor is there to Him any equivalent.

Recite Surat al-Ikhlas and the two Mu'awwidhatayn (al-Falaq and an-Nas) three times in the morning and three times in the evening; they will suffice you against everything.

3. Sayyid al-Istighfar (once)

Narrated by Shaddad ibn Aws (radiy-Allahu anhu)

The master du'a of seeking forgiveness is to say: 'O Allah, You are my Lord. There is no deity but You. You created me and I am Your servant; I am bound to You by Your covenant and Your promise as best I can. I seek refuge in You from the evil of what I have done. I acknowledge Your blessing upon me, and I confess my sin. So forgive me, for none forgives sins but You.'

4. La ilaha illa Allah, one hundred times

Narrated by Abu Hurairah (radiy-Allahu anhu)

Whoever says: 'There is no deity but Allah alone, He has no partner, His is the dominion and to Him belongs all praise, and He is over all things omnipotent' one hundred times in a day, it will be equal in reward to freeing ten slaves, one hundred good deeds will be recorded for him, one hundred sins will be wiped from him, and it will be a shield from the shaytan for that day until evening. None will surpass it except one who does more.

I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from every devil, every harmful creature, and every envious eye.

How the evening adhkar fit into the day

  • After Asr, before Maghrib. The principal window.
  • Before sunset. The window of strongest emphasis. The shayatin are described in authentic narration as spreading at sunset; the adhkar before this moment seal you.
  • Before sleep, separate from the evening set. The bedtime routine of cupped hands and the Mu'awwidhat (Sahih al-Bukhari 5017) is a third moment, distinct from the evening adhkar.
?If I miss the evening window, can I still recite later?
Yes. The recitation retains reward even if the formal window closes. Recite when you can.
?Do I recite the same set as the morning, or are some different?
The core set is the same. There are some specific evening-only du'as in Hisn al-Muslim (for example "Allahumma bika amsayna" instead of "asbahna"); these are worth learning once the core is steady.
?Can the family recite together?
Yes, and this is excellent. The household where the Mu'awwidhat are heard nightly is a protected household.
?What about long lists of dhikr I see on the internet that go for thirty minutes?
The classical compilation Hisn al-Muslim is the standard reference. Most other lists either summarise it or add weak narrations. Stick with verified sources.
?Does the evening dhikr cancel the need for the bedtime routine?
No. They are distinct. The evening adhkar are recited after Asr; the bedtime routine of cupped hands and the Mu'awwidhat (Sahih al-Bukhari 5017) and Ayat al-Kursi (Sahih al-Bukhari 5010) is performed when you actually go to bed.
?What if Asr comes too late in winter and Maghrib follows almost immediately?
In short-day climates, the window is genuinely tight. Recite immediately after Asr in those cases, and do not wait for a leisurely moment that the season will not provide.
