Morning remembrances (adhkar): the believer's daily shield

The Prophet (peace be upon him) taught that the one who says these words in the morning is protected until evening. Each entry below is logged in our reference ledger with its source and grading.

Why morning?

Fajr is when the believer's day is officially handed to Allah. The adhkar that follow Fajr seal the handover: they remind the heart whom it serves, they invoke specific Qur'anic protections against named harms, and they place the entire day under the One who decreed it.

The core morning recitation

1. Ayat al-Kursi

Allahu la ilaha illa huwa al-Hayyul-Qayyum...

Allah - there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of all existence. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is before them and what will be after them, and they encompass nothing of His knowledge except for what He wills. His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation tires Him not. And He is the Most High, the Most Great.

Say: He is Allah, the One. Allah is the Eternal Refuge. He neither begets nor is born. Nor is there to Him any equivalent.

Recite Surat al-Ikhlas and the two Mu'awwidhatayn (al-Falaq and an-Nas) three times in the morning and three times in the evening; they will suffice you against everything.

3. Sayyid al-Istighfar (once)

Narrated by Shaddad ibn Aws (radiy-Allahu anhu)

The master du'a of seeking forgiveness is to say: 'O Allah, You are my Lord. There is no deity but You. You created me and I am Your servant; I am bound to You by Your covenant and Your promise as best I can. I seek refuge in You from the evil of what I have done. I acknowledge Your blessing upon me, and I confess my sin. So forgive me, for none forgives sins but You.'

The Prophet () said in this hadith that whoever says it in the morning with certainty and dies before evening enters Paradise - and the same applies to evening.

4. La ilaha illa Allah, one hundred times

Narrated by Abu Hurairah (radiy-Allahu anhu)

Whoever says: 'There is no deity but Allah alone, He has no partner, His is the dominion and to Him belongs all praise, and He is over all things omnipotent' one hundred times in a day, it will be equal in reward to freeing ten slaves, one hundred good deeds will be recorded for him, one hundred sins will be wiped from him, and it will be a shield from the shaytan for that day until evening. None will surpass it except one who does more.

Narrated by Ibn Abbas (radiy-Allahu anhu)

I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from every devil, every harmful creature, and every envious eye.

How to actually do this every day

  1. Anchor to Fajr. Pray your Fajr in congregation if possible. The adhkar begin from the salah ending, not from waking.
  2. Sit still. Do not stand, do not move around the room. Sit on your prayer mat or in a quiet corner.
  3. Speak the words. Whisper or speak softly; do not say them silently in the mind only.
  4. Count with your fingers as the Prophet () taught. The fingers will testify on the Day of Judgement.
  5. Reflect on meaning. If you finish the routine in ten minutes flat, it probably means you raced through it. Aim for steady, present recitation.
?What if I miss Fajr or wake up after sunrise?
The adhkar of the morning have a window that extends through the first part of the morning - most scholars say up until duha or until midday. Recite them when you can; the routine is more important than the precise minute.
?Can I recite while doing housework or driving?
You can, but the early practice is better done seated and undivided. Once the routine is established, the additional adhkar can fill commutes and chores. The core five deserve undistracted attention.
?Should I use a counter app to keep track?
The Sunnah is to count with the fingers of the right hand. Apps and beads are permitted aids but they lose the testimony of the fingers and risk turning dhikr into a screen interaction.
?Is it required to say all of them or are some enough?
None of the morning adhkar is individually obligatory; together they are the Sunnah of the Prophet (). Even one or two recited consistently is better than the full set attempted briefly and then abandoned.
?What language do I recite in?
Arabic for the Qur'anic verses and the prophetic du'as. Translation is for understanding what you are saying, not for replacement.
?Do morning adhkar replace daily Qur'an reading?
No. They are different practices that complement each other. Both deserve a place in the believer's day.
