Ruqyah sequence

Ruqyah for sihr (black magic): the full A-to-Z sequence

Sihr is real, but it cannot harm anyone except by Allah's permission (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:102). The believer's response is not panic; it is the prophetic recitation sequence below. Recite it on yourself once a day for forty days, or longer, with full conviction that the cure is from Allah alone.

The Qur'anic ceiling on sihr

And they followed [instead] what the devils had recited during the reign of Solomon. It was not Solomon who disbelieved, but the devils disbelieved, teaching people magic and that which was revealed to the two angels at Babylon, Harut and Marut. But the two angels do not teach anyone unless they say, 'We are a trial, so do not disbelieve [by practicing magic].' And [yet] they learn from them that by which they cause separation between a man and his wife. But they do not harm anyone through it except by permission of Allah. And the people learn what harms them and does not benefit them. But the Children of Israel certainly knew that whoever purchased the magic would not have in the Hereafter any share. And wretched is that for which they sold themselves, if they only knew.

This verse is the foundation under everything that follows. Sihr exists; it does not override Allah's decree Recite the sequence below with this conviction firmly settled in the heart.

Step 1: Refuge

A'udhu billahi min ash-shaytan ir-rajim. Bismillah ir-Rahman ir-Rahim.

Step 2: Surah Al-Fatihah

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is for Allah, Lord of all worlds, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful, Master of the Day of Judgement. You alone we worship, and You alone we ask for help. Guide us to the straight path, the path of those You have blessed, not of those who have incurred Your wrath, nor of those who have gone astray.

Step 3: Ayat al-Kursi

Allahu la ilaha illa huwa al-Hayyul-Qayyum...

Allah - there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of all existence. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is before them and what will be after them, and they encompass nothing of His knowledge except for what He wills. His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation tires Him not. And He is the Most High, the Most Great.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) himself testified to the protective power of Ayat al-Kursi at bedtime:

Narrated by Abu Hurairah (radiy-Allahu anhu)

When you go to bed, recite Ayat al-Kursi; a guardian from Allah will remain with you, and no shaytan will come near you until morning.

Sahih al-Bukhari 5010 · Sahih (al-Bukhari)Verified

For stubborn cases of sihr, qualified raqis routinely recite Ayat al-Kursi 7 times, sometimes 9 or 11 times, in a single session - not because the Sunnah binds a specific count, but because repetition deepens conviction and focus.

Step 4: The last two ayat of Surah Al-Baqarah

The Messenger has believed in what was revealed to him from his Lord, and so have the believers. All of them have believed in Allah and His angels and His books and His messengers, saying, 'We make no distinction between any of His messengers.' And they say, 'We hear and we obey. Your forgiveness, our Lord, and to You is the final destination.' Allah does not charge a soul except with that within its capacity. It will have what it has earned, and it will bear what it has earned. 'Our Lord, do not impose blame upon us if we have forgotten or erred. Our Lord, lay not upon us a burden like that which You laid upon those before us. Our Lord, burden us not with that which we have no ability to bear. And pardon us; and forgive us; and have mercy upon us. You are our protector, so give us victory over the disbelieving people.'

Whenever the Prophet went to bed every night, he used to cup his hands together and blow over them after reciting Surat Al-Ikhlas, Surat Al-Falaq and Surat An-Nas, and then rub his hands over whatever parts of his body he was able to rub, starting with his head, face and front of his body. He used to do that three times.

Cup your hands, blow gently, wipe from head to feet three times. Make personal du'a in your own language asking Allah to lift the sihr and to protect you from a return.

Repetition counts: odd numbers and why

The Sunnah favours odd-number repetition in many acts of worship - the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Indeed, Allah is Witr (One) and loves the odd." In ruqyah practice this shapes how raqis count recitations:

  • 3 times - the baseline for most ruqyah recitations; the Prophet recited Mu'awwidhat 3 times nightly (Sahih al-Bukhari 5017), 3 times morning + evening (Sunan Abi Dawud 5082), and blew into his cupped hands 3 times.
  • 7 times - the Prophet (peace be upon him) instructed Uthman ibn Abi al-As to say \"A'udhu bi-'izzatillahi wa qudratihi...\" seven times for pain (Sahih Muslim 2202). For stubborn ayn or sihr, many raqis recite Ayat al-Kursi, Al-Fatihah, and the Mu'awwidhat 7 times each.
  • 9 or 11 times - higher odd counts used by experienced raqis for repeated or stubborn cases. These counts are not bound by an explicit Sunnah; they rest on the prophetic preference for odd numbers and the principle that repetition deepens conviction. Use any odd count you can do with presence; presence is the criterion, not the number.
  • 100 times - the Prophet specified this count for the tahlil: \"La ilaha illa-llah wahdahu la sharika lahu...\" - this protects from the shaytan for an entire day (Sahih Muslim 2691). For tasbih (subhana-llah), tahmid (al-hamdu li-llah), and takbir (Allahu akbar) the Sunnah also specifies 33 + 33 + 34 after each salah.

The principle behind every count: trust comes before number. A single recitation with full presence is better than a hundred recited absent-mindedly. Use a count you can sustain with focus; if 7 is too many today, do 3 with sincerity.

Important: what NOT to do

Narrated by Safiyyah (radiy-Allahu anha) from one of the wives of the Prophet (peace be upon him)

Whoever visits a diviner and asks him about anything, his prayer is not accepted for forty nights.

Sahih Muslim 2230 · Sahih (Muslim)Verified

Do NOT visit a magician to undo sihr - that is the warning of Sahih Muslim 2230, costing forty nights of salah. Do NOT seek the name of the one who cast it. Do NOT use counter-magic or amulets. Stay with recitation, salah, adhkar, and patience. The cure is from Allah, by the means He has revealed.

?How long until I see results?
Outcomes belong to Allah. Some are relieved in days, some in months, some carry the trial as a means of reward until death. What is yours to do is recite faithfully; what is Allah's to do is the cure, in His timing and His best form.
?Can someone else recite this over me?
Yes. A spouse, parent, child, or trusted scholar can recite over you. Self-recitation is the Sunnah baseline, but the Prophet's Companions also recited over each other. Avoid handing the sequence over to anyone whose methodology you do not know.
?Why forty days specifically?
Forty days is not a binding scriptural rule; it is a practical rhythm many qualified raqis recommend for stubborn cases. The Sharia requires consistency and trust; it does not bind a specific count. Continue past forty if needed. Stop earlier if Allah grants relief.
?Should I see a doctor in parallel?
Yes. Sahih al-Bukhari 5678 records that Allah did not send down a disease without sending its treatment. Ruqyah and medicine are both means He has placed in the world. The Prophet()sought medicine; we follow him in this too.

All praise is for Allah, Lord of all worlds — abundant, pure, blessed praise. O Allah, send Your prayers and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon all his family and Companions. I seek refuge in Allah from Satan, the rejected. In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate.

2. Al-Fātiḥah, Āyat al-Kursī, end of Al-Baqarah

And We inspired Mūsā: 'Throw your staff.' And at once it swallowed up what they were falsifying. So the truth was established, and what they had done was made void. They were defeated there and overturned in disgrace. And the magicians fell down in prostration, saying: 'We have believed in the Lord of all worlds — the Lord of Mūsā and Hārūn.'
