At what age do children need the most spiritual protection?
Children are spiritually fragile from birth. The Prophet, peace be upon him, sought refuge for Hasan and Husain - his infant grandchildren - using the words his father Ibrahim once used for Isma'il and Ishaq (Sahih al-Bukhari 3371). Two windows demand particular care: the early years when the child cannot yet recite their own protection, and the onset of puberty when the qarin's whispers begin in earnest (Sahih Muslim 2814 indicates every soul has an assigned jinn-companion). At every stage the parents' adhkar is the primary shield; the child grows into reciting their own.
My infant cries inconsolably. Could it be evil eye or jinn?
It may be, but rule out hunger, illness, and physical discomfort first. The Prophet, peace be upon him, confirmed the evil eye is real (Sahih al-Bukhari 5739, Sahih Muslim 2188), and infants who attract praise from those without barakah-protection are common targets. Recite Surah Al-Falaq (Qur'an 113:1-5), Surah An-Nas (Qur'an 114:1-6), and the Prophet's refuge for Hasan and Husain (Sahih al-Bukhari 3371) over the child. If the symptoms have a clear medical cause, see a paediatrician; ruqyah and medicine coexist as means from Allah.
Should I recite the three refuge surahs over my child every night?
Yes. The Prophet, peace be upon him, when reaching his bed each night, joined his palms, blew into them, recited Surah Al-Ikhlas (Qur'an 112:1-4), Surah Al-Falaq (Qur'an 113:1-5), and Surah An-Nas (Qur'an 114:1-6), then wiped his body from head down, repeating three times (Sahih al-Bukhari 5017). Apply the same prophetic protocol over the child before sleep. For an infant, the parent recites and blows gently; for a child of speech-age, guide them to recite their own. This is the strongest single nightly habit for raising a protected child.
?Does naming my child after a prophet protect them spiritually?
Naming after a prophet or pious person carries good ta'aluq and is recommended Sunnah, but the name itself does not protect. Protection comes from adhkar performed faithfully. Pair a good name with the prophetic adhkar - both, not either.
?Are cords, beads, or amulets hung on a child a form of shirk?
Yes, when they carry written shirk-formulas or invoke other-than-Allah. The Prophet (ﷺ) called such items shirk (Sunan Abi Dawud 3883). The ledger note specifies that lawful ruqyah does not fall under this warning - but cords, beads, and charms with unknown formulas or invocations of names other than Allah's are forbidden, even when sold as cultural or decorative.
