What are the three refuge surahs (al-Mu'awwidhat) and why are they grouped together?
The Mu'awwidhat are Surah Al-Ikhlas (112), Surah Al-Falaq (113), and Surah An-Nas (114) - the last three chapters of the Qur'an. They are grouped because the Prophet, peace be upon him, recited them together as a unit in his nightly practice (Sahih al-Bukhari 5017) and in his morning and evening adhkar (Sunan Abi Dawud 5082, graded Hasan). Al-Ikhlas declares pure tawheed; Al-Falaq seeks refuge from external harms (the night, sihr, envy); An-Nas seeks refuge from the inner whisperer.
When should I recite the refuge surahs?
At a minimum: three times in the morning and three times in the evening (Sunan Abi Dawud 5082, Hasan), and once each as part of the bedtime routine where the cupped hands are blown into and wiped over the body three times (Sahih al-Bukhari 5017). Many believers also recite them after every fard salah, and additional recitations are recommended during illness, travel, and seasons of difficulty.
Do the refuge surahs protect specifically from black magic and the evil eye?
Yes. Surah Al-Falaq names 'the blowers in knots' (verse 4), a Qur'anic reference to sihr, and 'an envier when he envies' (verse 5), a direct reference to ayn. Surah An-Nas names 'the retreating whisperer who whispers in the breasts of mankind, from among the jinn and mankind,' addressing the source of waswasah. The Prophet, peace be upon him, was himself cured of the sihr of Labid ibn al-A'sam through the eleven verses of these two surahs, recited in sequence.
?Can a non-Arabic speaker still benefit from the refuge surahs?
Yes. Recite them in Arabic - they are short, easy to memorise even for those who have never studied the language. Read translations alongside to understand the meaning. The protection is in the words Allah revealed, not in the recital's literary fluency.
?Are there occasions where these alone are not enough?
The Mu'awwidhat are the daily baseline. For severe difficulties, scholars recommend extending the recitation with Surah Al-Fatihah, Ayat al-Kursi, the last two ayat of Surat al-Baqarah, and longer passages such as Surah Al-Baqarah in full (Sahih Muslim 780).
